16 July - Day 86 -Hiking around Mt. Lassen

From Drakesbad Guest Ranch (Mile 1353.6) to three miles short of Hat Creek (Mile 1372)

Total PCT Miles Hiked Today: 19.4

Sean-o here.

We woke up damp near the trailhead where we'd camped with about a half dozen other thru-bees. At 8 o'clock, we went up to the dining hall where for $5 we were served the breakfast leftovers, just as we'd had the dinner remainders the night before. Drakesbad has a tradition of treating hikers very well and we were served with great care, attention and humor. We ate and ate and still the food kept coming.

Free Bird, Dionysus, Data, & Calf at Drakesbad after breakfast.

We got a late start on the trail and decided to take an alternate route that would bring us closer to some of the NP's sites, including King's Falls and Summit Lake. All the while we slowly worked our way around the looming shape of the volcano, which last erupted in 1915. Nothing so exciting today. :-)

Dark clouds this evening and a restless wind. So far we've been able to count days with precip on two fingers. Could that be about to change?

We hiked today with Data, a super-cool rafting guide and outdoorsmen who splits his time between California and Colorado. But he's originally from Wisconsin and his mom's a former teacher. Can't beat that! He hiked the PCT in 2006 and is back for a return trip. He is a font of info and knowledge about the trail and backpacking--hence his trail name.

Speaking of which ... a couple days ago I hiked all day and didn't discover till undressing that night that I had walked nearly 30 miles with my underwear on backwards. Hmm ... Maybe "Wedgie" should be my trailname?

Nah.
